FORMA Symposium

January 26 - January 27

Senior Boethius Fellow Dr. Matthew Walz gave a paper titled “Benedict XVI: Doctor of Reason“at the CiRCE FORMA symposium. In his paper, he makes a case that Pope Benedict XVI should be called the “Doctor of Reason” in light of his regular attempts during his papacy to address what he called the “dictatorship of relativism” by contributing to a “convalescence of reason.” Dr. Walz also lays out Benedict’s “remedies” for helping human reason to become healthy again.

At the symposium, speakers presented peer-reviewed papers, and all attendees engaged in the work of the symposium by asking questions, presenting ideas, and reviewing each others’ work. This symposium explored the theme “logocentrism.” What is the nature of a cosmos centered on and by the logos? What is the nature of truth expressed through the logos? How does our understanding of the logos impact our relationship with truth and therefore all learning? How might a logocentric cosmos dictate the logocentric school? Together, attendees sought a richer understanding of the logos in its varied forms and the implications of living within a cosmos ordered by the Logos Himself.
