Audience and Action in Byzantine Ceremonies

Kalamazoo, MI – Senior Fellow Erik Ellis presided over the Audience and Action in Byzantine Ceremonies panel while participating in the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University. The international group of panelists included Elisa Emaldi, the curator for the Justinianic basilicas in Ravenna.  The interdisciplinary group brought insights from archaeology, art history, literary studies, theology, and political theory to bear on Byzantine civic and religious ceremonies. They recreated and appreciated the mental, spiritual, and affective states of participants in these ceremonies. They plan to rework the papers into an edited volume over the next couple of years.
